This study was undertaken with the following ends in view:
- To furnish standards, so far as the available data will permit, of the average normal pulse rate under basal conditions and the extent of normal variations from this average.
- To observe the changes in pulse rate with age and with sex.
- To compare the age curve of pulse rate with the age curve of metabolic rate.
Data have been obtained through a survey of the published records of basal metabolism experiments, in which normal subjects were studied.
REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
It is not our purpose to present a complete review of the literature on the subject of pulse frequency. The reader is referred to the work of Tigerstedt1 for a thorough discussion. Only a few points which appear pertinent to the subject matter of this study will be mentioned.
