In a previous article¹ the measurement of the output of the heart per beat, by direct determination of the oxygen contents of arterial and venous blood, was shown to be a practical clinical procedure. Marked and consistent differences were noted between the values obtained in normal persons and in those with heart failure. The results in normal subjects agreed very closely with those obtained by other methods employed by physiologists and regarded as reliable. Briefly the test consists of the simultaneous determination of (a) the oxygen contents of arterial and venous bloods; (b) the oxygen requirement of the tissue per minute, and (c) the pulse rate. From these are calculated in order (a) the oxygen consumption, that is, the difference between the arterial and venous oxygen contents; (b) the total output of blood per minute from the heart, and (c) the output per beat.
