As a result of many clinical and experimental investigations, current opinion regards epinephrine as producing little if any effect when administrated orally. Sollmann¹ states that "it is entirely ineffective by oral administration" and that "the blood pressure response is practically absent" when given by mouth. In "Useful Drugs"² it is stated that, "when given by mouth, it produces no evident effect on the general circulation." Cushny³ states that "when given by mouth, it has no effect on the blood pressure or heart." According to an article in the "Pharmacology of Useful Drugs,"⁴ "epinephrine is one of the few alkaloids in the materia medica which are not absorbed from the gastrointestinal canal with such rapidity as to induce any appreciable effect."
