In a previous communication,1 I reported the results of an investigation on the phenomenon of xanthosis occurring during the course of diabetes mellitus. The incidence of this condition does not appear to be great. It was found in only fifty-nine of 1,400 diabetic patients, selected at random at the clinic for patients with diabetes in the Montreal General Hospital. The significance of xanthosis was discussed. It was suggested that a diet high in vegetable content to which the diabetic patient is subjected and to which this condition is generally attributed is not the only factor involved. Evidence favoring this view was that thirteen of the fifty-nine patients with this skin condition had never been on special diets prior to its detection, and that, so far as I am aware, it is not found in vegetarians.
