The merits of the fractional method of studying the gastric contents of the stomach have been conclusively established (Rehfuss1). As a routine office procedure, however, I fully agree with the recent views so aptly expressed by Kaufmann2 that a single specimen gastric test meal, carefully obtained and studied, fully suffices or may even be advantageous for general diagnostic purposes or as an index of gastric secretion and digestion. The fractional method should not replace, but supplement, the original single specimen gastric test. If one desires a more detailed study of the degree or curve of the acid wave, then there is no doubt that the extractions made at frequent intervals elicit more exact information. Every one is aware of instances in which the single extraction test meal did not reveal free hydrochloric acid, whereas the repeated extractions made in the same patient showed acids at one period or another.
