I. THE RELATION OF SOLAR RADIATION TO THE DISTRIBUTION AND PREVALENCE OF ENDEMIC GOITER IN THE UNITED STATES
In the preparation of another paper1 dealing with pellagra, in which the relative deficiency of solar rays in winter seemed to have a conditioned relationship to the distribution of pellagra, it was noted that the pellagra area in the United States, broadly speaking, ends where the area of endemic goiter begins, and that deficiency of winter sunshine is more marked in the goiter area than in the pellagra area. A somewhat similar relationship in the geographical distribution of the two diseases may be seen also in Europe and Asia. Southwest Virginia appears to be one of few areas of the earth's surface where endemic goiter and endemic pellagra meet on common ground, and in this area the prevalence of each is only moderate.
