The question as to whether or not uterine myoma causes heart disease has been argued since 1885 when Hof meier¹ started the discussion by saying that he believed this type of tumor could injure the heart. Most of the early writers agreed with Hofmeier, although in 1890 Williams² expressed a contrary opinion when he said that in his experience, uterine fibroid was less often associated with heart disease than was any other pelvic lesion. Strassmann and Lehmann³ in 1898 reported a series of 71 cases of uterine myoma in 34 per cent of which there was evidence of cardiac damage. These authors believed that the tumor could cause degenerative changes in the heart muscle. Other early writers who agreed with the views of Strassmann and Lehmann were Wilson,⁴ Fleck,⁵ Baldy,⁶ Cumston,⁷ Boldt⁸ and Kessler.⁹ The question as to whether secondary anemia from menorrhagia and metrorrhagia in these cases was not . . .
