In 1892, Dr. Stevens, then an instructor in physical diagnosis in the University of Pennsylvania, published the first edition of this manual. It was written at the request of many students, with the hope that it would serve as an outline of the practice of medicine "which shall be enlarged upon by diligent attention upon lectures and critical observations at the bedside." It proved a successful venture, for the fourth edition appeared in 1896. This edition was reviewed in The Journal of the American Medical Association (28:664 [April 3] 1897). The reviewer commented: "This little manual has reached its fourth edition—evidence of merit. Its author understands the art of constructing a clear and fairly comprehensive abstract of the contents of the larger works of medicine, to which due reference is made in the preface.
