Although numerous reports have been published on the roentgenologic observations on various forms of chronic arthritis, the subject has not received the careful attention which it merits from the point of view of differential diagnosis. A considerable number of the studies which have been reported have dealt with the question of tuberculous and pyogenic arthritis, and comparatively little attention has been paid to the much more frequent rheumatoid arthritis and osteo-arthritis. In recent years, however, the increasing tendency to regard rheumatoid arthritis and osteo-arthritis as separate and distinct clinical entities has focused attention on these two varieties of arthritis, and there have been reports of several studies dealing with the roentgenologic observations on the two diseases.¹ The student of arthritis is particularly referred to the recent comprehensive work of Brailsford,10 with its extensive bibliography.
