In 1913 Reschad and Schilling-Torgau¹ reported the first case of monocytic leukemia. Two years later the second case was described by Fleischmann.² In 1930 Dameshek³ reviewed the literature and found only ten acceptable case reports. Clough⁴ in 1932 brought the number up to twenty-three.

On a subsequent examination of the literature a total of seventyseven reports of well established cases were found. Of these four had not been available to previous reviewers, and seventy-three have appeared since Clough's report. The addition of eight cases which have come under our observation and which are herein presented brings the total number of acceptable cases described to eighty-five. In addition to these, approximately twenty-five case reports have been rejected because of insufficient or unconvincing data.
