Numerous investigations have dealt with the incidence of tuberculosis in surgically removed tonsils. However, the majority of the earlier reports were based on relatively small series of cases or on selected cases, from which the true incidence of tuberculosis in surgically removed tonsils in all age groups, irrespective of the presence or absence of tuberculosis elsewhere, could not be determined.

Weller¹ was the first to report a series of sufficient length and nonselectivity to answer this question. The tonsils studied comprised the surgical material received as a routine in this laboratory during the years 1906 to 1919. The faucial and/or pharyngeal tonsils of 8,607 patients were studied, and the incidence of tuberculosis for the entire group was found to be 2.35 per cent.
