This handsome monograph is somewhat disappointing. Most of it is a compilation, put together in a rather uncritical and disjointed style, of material that is readily available in the current literature. One is given the impression that everything leads up to the chapter on surgery. Here technic and procedure are discussed in detail, and there are some excellent colored plates of the surgical anatomy of the thyroid region. The author properly stresses his own methods, but the final picture of the incision closed by clips, with a drain protruding from the center of the wound, is a shock to those familiar with Halsted's beautiful "silk technic." The reviewer fails to see the point of the reproduction on the title page of the bronze cast of Dr. Sloan's hands. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
