From the time of its first appearance in 1892, Osler's "Principles and Practice of Medicine" has been the most valued guide to the practice of medicine in the English language. Its use as a reference has been worldwide. This prestige has been maintained through subsequent editions prepared under Dr. Osler's hand and later under the hand of his student and friend Dr. McCrae. The new thirteenth edition is prepared by another former pupil and friend, Dr. Henry A. Christian, and fully maintains the standard set by the former editions. It is inevitable that extensive changes should be made. The text has been rewritten in part, to include the most recent advances in medical knowledge and practice.
