—(a) Pituitary Gland and Carbohydrate Metabolism: In last year's review¹ attention was directed to the significance of Young's production of permanent diabetes in dogs by repeated injections of crude extracts of anterior lobes of beef pituitaries for a long period. This work, together with the more significant literature that bears on the relation of the anterior lobe of the pituitary to carbohydrate metabolism, is reviewed by Young² in a readable paper which he gave before the section of physiology at the annual meeting (1939) of the British Medical Association. A tentative general conclusion from experiments of Long, Russell, Bennett³ and others assigns to the secretion of the anterior lobe of the pituitary a depressive action on the oxidation of carbohydrate in the muscles and promotion of glycogen storage.
