In this volume are presented the discussions on convalescent care occurring at the conference held for that purpose in New York. Convalescent care for the various types of medical or surgical patients or those with neurologic diseases is discussed in detail with reference to the medical, social and economic aspects.

The necessity for proper convalescent care after even minor illnesses, and certainly after severe infections, has at no time received the attention which it should from the attending physician. Surgical patients have been largely neglected.

Patients with cardiac disease have received some attention, but only in certain cities; and even this has been inadequate. Not only is convalescent care necessary for the welfare of these patients as regards restoration to a normal level of health and usefulness, but it is important as one means of reducing the cost of medical care to the patient and to the community.
