Amazingly enough the title of this book is not sufficiently inclusive, because in addition to the subjects mentioned there are presented sections on surgery of the mouth and of the esophagus. Perhaps the explanation for the inclusion of these subjects in a volume the purpose of which "is to present surgical treatment of abdominal diseases..." lies in their close embryologic relation to the gastrointestinal tract. Actually, the book consists of a collection of monographs on the subjects already mentioned and on the surgical management of lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, the biliary tract, the liver, the pancreas and the spleen and of peritonitis and peritoneal abscesses. One chapter is devoted to the significance of gastroscopy and another to diets for patients operated on for abdominal conditions. With few exceptions the collaborators who have written these various sections are distinguished surgeons well recognized for their contributions in these respective fields. . . .
