Much of the past year's literature on gastroenterologic subjects consists in confirmation or refutation of previously advanced ideas and observations. Such a state of flux is inevitable in consideration of the fact that experimental observations fundamentally represent a continuous process of addition, with occasional subtraction because of newer evidence. For this reason in any review it is necessary and wise to include much that is not entirely new but which sheds light on current ideas, many of which need modification and some of which need to be stressed again and again in order to establish the importance of fundamental clinical or physiologic principles. As in previous years, I will attempt to present a composite impression of many, but by no means all, of the articles that have appeared during the past year, avoiding as far as possible the inclusion of certain contributions which are merely repetitions of already recorded observations. . . .
