SPLENIC DISORDERS

Banti's Syndrome.

—An instance of Banti's disease due to stenosis of the portal vein without hepatic cirrhosis is reported by Trimble and Hill.318 The postmortem observation of mechanical congestive splenomegaly lends further support to the view of Thompson that hypertension of the portal vein is the common denominator of so-called Banti's disease. The portal hypertension results in splenomegaly, collateral circulation and the development of esophageal varices. Churchill319 cites a 24 year old man who had ascites, anemia, leukopenia, thrombopenia and splenomegaly. Splenectomy was performed, and the patient died with bronchopneumonia during the postoperative period. The spleen was shown to contain increased amounts of fibrous tissue and the splenic vein hyalinized plaques of intimal thickening. Pemberton320 reports the outcome in 226 cases in which splenectomy was performed at the Mayo Clinic for splenic anemia and Banti's disease. The mortality rate for the . . .
