This volume maintains the high standards set by the previous research publications. In 1942 the subject of pain was selected as the topic for the annual meeting of the organization. Thirty-seven different contributors, with associates in some instances, have made possible a 468 page discussion of what is, to make a trite statement, the most important symptom subjectively in the category of symptoms, namely pain. This "simple sensory experience" is discussed from innumerable points of view. The symposium starts out with a physiologic and psychologic discussion of pain and continues more specifically in the field of special types of pain, such as those that occur in heart disease, in headache and in diseases of the digestive tract and of other important organs and systems of the body.
