In his introduction the writer states that he has tried to reach a middle ground between the elementary sketch of the subject and the "elaborate, unwieldy, cumbersome and often encyclopedic tome." At any rate he has produced an excellent book, clearly and concisely written and thoroughly documented with many references to the literature. The subject is covered, however, in the conventional manner, and, while the material is well up to date, there is nothing of startling novelty.
