Dr. Napier has had a quarter of a century of experience in the tropics, most of it in India. This extensive experience permits him to write with real authority on such topics as malaria, cholera, kala-azar, epidemic plague and the dysenteries, diseases that are common in that country. A feature of the book that will be appreciated by the student is the consecutive presentation of each disease; this is not characteristic of texts on tropical medicine. Another advantageous feature is the bibliography; it is not overloaded, but the citations that are given are well selected and appear to be accurate. While revolutionary ideas are not expressed, most chapters contain evidence of original thought as well as personal experience, so that even persons familiar with the subjects will find the presentation stimulating.
