In writing this book the author has accomplished rather satisfactorily the purposes of the book discussed in the preface. The book is concise, clearly written, factual and easy to read, and it contains information of practical value, particularly to the general practitioner. The print is pleasingly clear, with large type for various headings and subheadings. There are numerous illustrations which are clear and helpful. As stated by the author, this is a handbook for everyday use and not a complete reference book. As such it is subject to the same criticism that can be directed toward any book which tries to cover such a large subject in a relatively brief manner, namely, the necessity of presenting without qualifications an arbitrary, one-sided viewpoint on subjects about which there may be differences of opinion among equally competent gastroenterologists.
