Dr. Harvey Cushing once remarked that the chief justification for the specialist was his ability to do research; he should explore new fields in medicine, always striving to make the results of his explorations promptly useful to men in general practice. To those interested in the broad aspects of internal medicine this viewpoint is sound.

The management of sterility is not a new specialty. Every internist in the course of his work encounters couples who are baffled by their apparent inability to have children. A group of physicians, including pathologists and biochemists as well as clinicians, have become sufficiently aware of this to form a society under the auspices of the National Committee on Maternal Health.
