This small volume was printed under the auspices of the Commonwealth Fund. It contains a lecture delivered at the New York Academy of Medicine as part of a series on the general topic of medicine in the future. Evidently it was prepared for public consumption and thus is written in simple, nontechnical language. It makes pleasant reading.

The changes in public health which have taken place in the last forty years are emphasized by simply constructed tables, and the hazards to the health of an aging population are duly stressed. Looking to the future, the author gives chief emphasis to the value of research and education to public health. He believes that good health can be given to no one; it is the task of the individual to earn it, and his ability to do this will depend to an increasing degree on his intelligence, energy and desire as means . . .
