To the Editor:

—We believe that our investigation of the mercurial diuretics was extensive enough to report the facts. The publication of the investigation by Pines and his associates did not state the number of animals used, and therefore we could not assume that their investigation was extensive. Their report, however, was complete to that date, and we believe that due recognition was given to this fact.

It is not justifiable to compare our method with theirs as the time interval of injection of a mercurial and a detoxifying substance was considerably different, ours being two and five minutes and theirs thirty minutes. It is reasonable to believe that the longer the time interval of injection the lesser the accumulation of mercury in the circulation to produce a cardiotoxic effect. . . .
