There are few systems of the body that are less well understood generally than the skeletal system. The metabolism of calcium and phosphorus and the mechanism by which bones maintain their integrity are more or less taken for granted by most physicians. With the publication of this excellent book there is no longer any reason for any physician to fail to understand the principles of the physiology of the parathyroid glands and the pathologic physiology of some of the bone diseases. The material is presented in a simple, clear, didactic manner which leaves the reader no doubt concerning the views of the authors. The clinical studies which form the basis of these views have been conducted in the metabolic ward of the Massachusetts General Hospital over a period of twenty-four years.
