This is a well organized, easily read monograph covering the theoretical and practical aspects of thrombosis and embolism, with particular emphasis on their prevention and treatment with heparin and bishydroxycoumarin (dicumarol^®). The rationale, clinical indications, methods of administration, toxic manifestations and abuses of the anticoagulants are completely discussed. The table of contents is so arranged as to be very helpful in references to subjects in the text. The appendixes furnish detailed methods for determination of coagulation time of whole blood, one and two stage prothrombin content and clotting time and prothrombin titration. Practical suggestions and common sources of error encountered in each of these tests are indicated. The 642 references cover the literature through most of 1950 and should serve as an adequate source of more detailed information when it is needed.
