Dr. Marriott has undertaken a rather formidable task, that of encompassing in a single volume the high points of medical progress in the past decade and setting them down in simple enough form to be understood by the lay public. On the whole, he has done a very creditable job, although it is hardly likely that all the material will be easily digested by those without medical training. His subject matter includes the whole range of antibiotics now in common use, cardiac surgery, antithyroid drugs, the Rh factor, BAL (dimercaprol), drugs against leprosy, cortisone and corticotropin (ACTH), antimalarial drugs, and dimenhydrinate (dramamine^®). Obviously, the discussions are of necessity sketchy in most instances, but they are presented in a fairly unbiased fashion. A real attempt has been made to outline the shortcomings in the new methods of treatment, so that unjustified hopes will not be aroused.
