AS THIS review goes to press, there comes from England the news of the death of Sir Charles Sherrington in his 95th year. A brilliant man has passed into medical history, great because of his industry and insight, beloved because of his modesty and humanity. For the past 15 years he has been in retirement, suffering from arthritis, but intellectually active to the last, interesting himself in general problems of physiology, psychology, and history. His last contribution to the field of neurology and psychiatry was the talk he gave for the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1950 introducing a series of broadcasts on "The Physical Basis of Mind."¹ Although his experimental work had largely to do with spinal reflexes and the motor system of the brain, he was always thinking of broad principles.
