The fact that this book which deals with only one disease is not at all "padded" shows how internal medicine has grown. The older textbook matters of clinical features, pathology, etc. are thoroughly dealt with, but of especial importance are the chapters on the pathological physiology, the CO2 intoxication syndrome, and inhalational therapy. Although the specialist in this domain puts on a good show with his therapeutic armamentarium, the fact still remains that obstructive emphysema is a relentlessly progressive disorder and at best the available therapeutic measures ease the inevitable descent.
