Production and General Observations on Erythrocyte Metabolism

A most comprehensive review and study of reticulocytes and a method for determining erythrocyte production have been presented by Seip.³²⁴ Reference to the original monograph is recommended. Factors involved in the transmission of young red cells from the bone marrow to the blood are the oxygen concentration in the blood-regulating center of the hypothalamic region and a neurohumeral mechanism.³²⁴ Reticulocytosis has been produced in rabbits and monkeys by intravenous administration of homologous anemic serum and in humans by erythroblastotic sera.³²⁴ A macronormoblastic erythropoiesis occurs in cardiac insufficiency.³²⁷ A conditioned reflex for erythroid cell production was produced in rabbits by LoMonaco by exposure to simultaneous barometric depression and luminous stimuli daily. After 14 days of treatment, an increase of erythrocytes was induced by stimulation with light.³²⁸
