The complexity of so many fields in medicine, the difficulty of reading innumerable journals in many languages, and the proliferation of specialties has increased the value of the Annual Review series, of which this volume in physiology is a worthy companion to its distinguished predecessors in the series. This is particularly true since some effort is made to view the great amorphous mass of "the literature" both selectively and critically. Since the topics change from year to year, it is a very important reference book for anyone dealing with the problems in clinical medicine or physiology included in its table of contents.
