This provocative little book, which can be read through in less time than a television program requires, is the presidential address of Dr. Burch at the January, 1955, meeting of the Southern Society for Clinical Research. Since at least half the space is taken up by cartoon illustrations, one of which appears on the cover, the casual browser may mistake the small volume for a medical "funny book." The cartoons are effective, and, if shown on slides as the author gave his address, may have helped hold the attention of his audience and nail down his points. What the author has to say is serious and is stated with sufficient clarity and brevity to hold the attention of most readers. It seems unfortunate that cartoons take up so much of the book.
